The capabilities of artificial intelligence applications such as ChatGPT are no longer surprising. From creating jokes and poems to writing a programming language and solving mathematical problems, there is no area where ChatGPT cannot help. But have you ever considered that the results from such tools can be even better if we formulate tasks according to research-based methodologies and proven practices? In this post, we will share simple but effective tips and examples on how to get the most out of ChatGPT.

Common mistakes when formulating ChatGPT requests

Although the principle of using ChatGPT seems quite simple, many people make mistakes when working with more complex tasks. Here are some of the most common:

  • Insufficient additional information and context
  • Too much misleading and unclear information is provided
  • Information is fragmented and unstructured
  • Verbose, not using short and clear instructions
  • “Not interacting” with ChatGPT, i.e. not taking on board the tool’s comments and suggestions

If you have identified yourself in any of these points, don’t despair, because you’ll know immediately what to do to stop making them again.

Tips to help you formulate your ChatGPT requests in Lithuanian more accurately

The way we structure our requests when working with the ChatGPT tool is a key skill for a quality result. Breaking down the task to be formulated into individual items helps to do this. The research-based structure of task generation looks quite simple:

But how does this scheme work in practice? Here’s a list of simple but effective tips to help you “get to grips” with ChatGPT based on the Task Structuring Principle shown above.

1. “Embody” ChatGPT, i.e. give it a specific role

Role Prompting or Act As is one of the most popular tricks for making AI more productive. By putting you in a specific role, ChatGPT will perform the task from the perspective of a specialist in that field. If the task is marketing-related, give the tool the role of a marketer, if it is a maths task, give it the role of a maths teacher. It is important that the specifics of the task are appropriate to the role given. It will be even better if you also provide additional information when assigning the role.

Example: You are a financial expert who has been commissioned to analyse a company’s financial year.

2. Clearly identify the task and its purpose

This is perhaps the most important point in achieving a quality result. When designing the assignment, be as clear as possible about the outcome you are aiming for, i.e. the purpose of ChatGPT. Keep it simple, start with a verb (e.g. create, write), include all relevant variables, and if the task is very complex, “agree” to work with ChatGPT step by step, breaking down one big task into several smaller ones.

Example: Create an engaging social media post for the Instagram platform that promotes the core features of our app (diet plans and workout posts) and is targeted at our target audience (women, 20-40 years old). Start with attention-grabbing text under the visual. Create an interesting idea for a static visual. Create a converting text for the visual. Check that the text is fluent and relevant to the visual idea.

3. Draw clear boundaries

Just like with people, with ChatGPT it is important to know how to draw boundaries and build a relationship. Therefore, it is worth identifying not only what you expect from ChatGPT, but also what you really don’t want to receive. And by praising the tool for its work and emphasising the importance of the task (Emotion Prompt), you will motivate it to do even better.

Example: Do not use complex phrases and do not use a lot of verbiage. The full text should be no longer than 200 words. Clear presentation of this information is very important for our business and I appreciate your efforts.

4. Include as much context as possible

Like any professional in the field, ChatGPT performs much better when given enough context. When formulating a task, it is worth including details that are not necessarily directly relevant to the task. For example, inform the ChatGPT about the specifics of your business, customers, values, services or products.

Example: Our company’s goal is to revolutionise smart outdoor lighting in the Lithuanian market. Our mission is to promote a culture of lighting in public places based on ecology and performance. We develop and install smart lighting systems in public spaces. Our target audience is urban municipalities.

5. Give examples

Just one or a few examples of working with ChatGPT can do wonders. Most importantly, a good example can make your job of formulating a task much shorter, as it will not only give ChatGPT more information and context, but also dictate the style and format of the result. However, it is important not to give too many examples, and sometimes it is useful to show bad examples.

Example: Create a product description similar to this one, but apply it to a pair of black, leather, long-boots with a zipper and a decorative chain: “Long-sleeved blouse in navy blue for girls. The garment is distinguished by an imitation white shirt protruding from underneath the top and bottom of the blouse. The blouse has an exclusive design and is made of high quality, breathable pure cotton.

6. Please indicate your preferred format and response style

An important point which, if ignored, may not lead to the result you expect. Specify all formatting and style expectations, and if you don’t know, inform ChatGPT and ask them to suggest the format and style that best suits the task.

Example: Please submit a blog post of no more than 500 words on landscaping a small plot, written in a friendly but professional tone. Use H1, H2, H3 tags and highlight the most important points.

Additional tricks for working with ChatGPT

In addition to the above, there are a few more tips to help you work more smoothly with ChatGPT:

  • Use query templates found on the internet – just edit them to suit your needs
  • Keep the wording of tasks that have lived up to expectations
  • Be patient – with consistent work, you’ll get better at formulating your tasks each time
  • Ask ChatGPT to formulate the task for you. Genius, right?

ChatGPT is a wonderful tool and it is up to you to decide how much you get out of it. By mastering these tips and the ones discussed above, you will definitely be able to curb the ChatGPT AI program and achieve great results.
